Much has been said, almost ad infinitum about this song. Here, I talk about the song as a move in the collective consciousness of America from Amber to Orange/Green. Was the day the music died, the day that old worldviews and traditional social conditioning suddenly no longer made sense? Sure, it was about the death of Buddy Holly, and sure, there are perhaps allegorical characters specifically mirroring cultural celebtrities, but as a whole, is this not a universal process of growth? For those who journey beyond religious literalism, do we not all experience the death and rebirth that in some way resembles the Americana-rich death portrayed in this song as a colorful masquerade?
